Biosphere Reserves

are large-scale model regions for complexly-structured culture landscapes, which are used sustain ably by humans. They include core zones, various types of protected areas, and land which is used in accordance with ecological concepts. The use of the land within the limits set by the environment, is an important component. Organic farming and eco-tourism are particularly well-suited to this model.

Worldwide, there are over 300 of these reserves. As part of UNESCO\s international network, each reserve is required to fulfill the goals of research, environmental monitoring, and environmental education.
